Lake Vänern Close to Freezing Over Completely

Lake Vänern is currently experiencing one of the most remarkable ice situations since 2013 — the last time the entire lake froze over.

Right now, almost the whole lake is covered in ice. What remains is essentially a matter of wind direction.

It is no longer temperature that decides.
It is the wind.

The ice is drifting back and forth depending on wind direction. A northern wind compresses it. A southern wind opens up areas again. From a distance, it may look stable — but the movement beneath is constant.

This is what makes Lake Vänern so difficult to read.

Why This Is the Most Challenging Ice Situation Since 2013

In 2013, when the lake last froze completely, conditions were stable for a longer period.

This year we have had:

  • Extended cold periods
  • Short mild interruptions
  • Shifting wind directions
  • Large drifting ice fields

The result is a lake that is almost locked — but still very much alive.

For an inexperienced eye, it can look safe.
For someone who knows the lake, the movement is visible.

Ice on Lake Vänern Is Never Static

Lake Vänern covers 5,650 km². When it freezes, it behaves more like an inland sea than a small forest lake.

The ice:

  • Drifts
  • Presses into ridges
  • Cracks
  • Refreezes
  • Opens again

The right wind for a few days can seal the entire lake.
The wrong wind can open large leads within hours.

This is why understanding ice conditions here is not about a single observation — it is about years of experience.

Planning Fishing or Guided Tours?

For anyone planning fishing, nature experiences or transport on the lake, this knowledge is crucial.

Ice, wind and water levels interact.
Historical observations help.
But local, real-time experience is what truly matters.

I operate on Lake Vänern all year round.
I monitor the lake daily.
I have long experience understanding how different wind systems affect ice formation and movement.

When conditions allow, winter on Lake Vänern is extraordinary.
When they don’t — knowing why makes all the difference.
